With an unexpected announcement, one of the primary contenders in the Irish race for president has withdrawn from the campaign, reshaping the election dynamics.
The party's Jim Gavin stepped down on Sunday night following revelations about an unpaid debt to a former tenant, turning the race into an uncertain two-horse race between a centre-right ex-minister and an non-aligned left-leaning parliamentarian.
The 54-year-old Gavin, a newcomer to politics who was parachuted into the race after work in athletics, flying and armed forces, quit after it emerged he had not repaid a excess rental payment of over three thousand euros when he was a lessor about in the mid-2000s, during a period of monetary strain.
"I made a mistake that was not in keeping with my character and the expectations I hold. Corrective actions are underway," he said. "I have also thought long and hard, concerning the influence of the ongoing campaign on the welfare of my relatives and acquaintances.
"Taking all these considerations onboard, I've chosen to exit from the campaign for president with right away and return to the arms of my family."
A major surprise in a political contest in modern times limited the options to one candidate, a ex-minister who is running for the governing moderate right Fine Gael party, and Catherine Connolly, an outspoken pro-Palestinian voice who is supported by Sinn Féin and left-leaning minor parties.
The withdrawal also triggered a crisis for the prime minister and party head, MicheĂ¡l Martin, who had staked his authority by choosing an inexperienced hopeful over the reservations of fellow members.
Martin said the candidate wished to avoid "cause dispute" to the presidential role and was right to withdraw. "Jim has accepted that he made an error in relation to an issue that has emerged recently."
Although known for competence and success in enterprise and sports – Gavin had steered Dublin's Gaelic football team to five consecutive championship victories – his political bid struggled through blunders that put him at a disadvantage in an public opinion measure even prior to the financial revelation.
Fianna FĂ¡il figures who had been against choosing Gavin said the episode was a "significant mistake" that would have "repercussions" – a barely concealed caution to Martin.
Gavin's name may still appear for selection in the vote scheduled for October 24, which will finish the long service of Michael D Higgins, but voters now face a dichotomy between a mainstream moderate hopeful and an autonomous progressive. Opinion research conducted ahead of the withdrawal gave Connolly a third of the vote and Humphreys nearly a quarter, with Gavin on 15%.
As per election guidelines, people pick contenders based on preference. In case nobody reaches 50% on the first count, the contender receiving the lowest first preference votes is removed and their votes are transferred to the following option.
It was expected that in the event of his exclusion, a majority of his ballots would go to Humphreys, and conversely, enhancing the possibility that a mainstream contender would win the presidential office for the governing partnership.
The presidency is a primarily ceremonial position but incumbents and past holders made it a platform on global issues.
Connolly, 68, from Galway, would introduce a robust progressive perspective to that legacy. She has criticized neoliberal economics and stated the group represents "part of the fabric" of the people of Palestine. Connolly has alleged Nato of militarism and likened Germany's increased defence spending to the pre-war era, when Germany underwent rearmament.
The 62-year-old Humphreys, has been subjected to review over her time in office in governments that presided over a property shortage. Being a member of that faith from the border county of Monaghan, she has also been questioned about her lack of Irish language skills but commented her Protestant heritage could help win over loyalists in the North in a united Ireland.
