The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
