The total count of lives lost due to the transport jet which burst into flames and crashed has climbed to 13, as confirmed by latest announcements.
City Leader's Announcement
While en route to the Teamsters’ vigil, I learned of a 13th person that lost their life as a result of the plane crash,” stated the local official in a public communication. “My thoughts are with the loved ones, companions and co-workers of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this as one.”
Deceased Identified
A statement from the company named the officers operating the jet as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our thoughts are extended to each employee who has been impacted and all in our community region – assisting you and guaranteeing you get the support and resources you need is our focus,” the company’s message read.
Inquiry Updates
Federal authorities disclosed that the freight aircraft’s left wing burst into flames and an power plant separated just after liftoff from the aviation hub, causing the jet to fall and burst into a fireball.
The safety agency announced it is examining the plane’s service record, which was in Texas for maintenance weeks before the incident.
Flight tracking information showed the jet was on the tarmac in that location from early September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this plane was there in San Antonio,” stated an NTSB member on Thursday, without providing a precise date range. “We will examine every piece of maintenance that was completed, from the Texas visit, all the way to the day of the journey.”
Recovery of Key Components
The pilot’s recorder and information unit were recovered, and the motor was found on the tarmac.
The units – called black boxes – were built to withstand crash impacts and extreme temperatures from fires, and they seemed to be intact when located among the crash debris. Authorities will reviewing data from the devices.
The plane’s concluding data recordings indicated an height of 475 ft and a velocity of that speed before the impact.
Repair History
According to Federal Aviation Administration files from 18 September, a crack on a structural piece within the center wing fuel tank demanded fixes.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which indicated it offers airframe maintenance for UPS’s MD-11 and manages a repair facility in Texas, chose not to speak, but expressed it would work closely when officials approached it.
Activities Restart
At the same time, UPS Worldport services restarted that evening with its express or nighttime procedure, official Jim Mayer stated. Each of the three tarmacs at the airport were also open again.
The sorting center in the city is the company’s largest. The hub employs over 20,000 individuals in the region, processes three hundred trips each day and organizes over four hundred thousand packages per hour.
Community Support
A candlelight vigil was organized on the night of that date by the area Teamsters Union, which represents employees at the Louisville airport, the organization’s biggest freight center.
Teamsters Local 89, which represents UPS workers, started the vigil with a moment of silence at that time, the approximate moment of the incident previously.
“This incident was so abrupt, so unforeseen,” the mayor addressed the crowd of 200. “No one had a opportunity to say goodbye to any of those who we have mourned.”
